IN THE MATTER OF the Citizenship Act,

R.S.C., 1985, c. C-29

AND IN THE MATTER OF an appeal from the

decision of a Citizenship Judge

AND IN THE MATTER OF

Shahrzad Janmohammad Vazirabadi,

                                                        REASONS FOR ORDER

McKEOWN, J.:

[1]         The appellant appeals a decision of the Citizenship Judge dated March 21, 1997 wherein the Citizenship Judge found that she did not have adequate knowledge of Canada and/or the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. The Citizenship Judge also found that there were no grounds under subsection 5(3) and 5(4) of the Citizenship Act.

[2]         The appellant appeared before me on June 30, 1998 in Toronto and was questioned by the amicus curiae. It is obvious that she has made great progress in her knowledge of Canada since the time of her appearance before the Citizenship Judge. She was able to identify the capital cities of Canada and of Ontario, as well as the Prime Minister of Canada and the Premier of Ontario. She knew there were ten provinces, she knew the province in which she lives, she knew some of the duties and responsibilities of a Canadian citizen. She was able to identify two of the three political parties in Ontario and she knew that July 1st was Canada Day and that the originating event occured in 1967.

[3]         I find that the appellant now has an adequate knowledge of Canada and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. Accordingly, the appeal is allowed.
